Hong Kong is a market where payment demand from local consumers and mainland Chinese customers moves together. This guide covers the payment flow, Hecto Financial's coverage, and settlement structure for accepting mainland Alipay (Zhifubao), operated by the Ant group of companies, on sales into Hong Kong. It is a separate service from AlipayHK, the Hong Kong-local wallet.
Hong Kong is a city economy of about 7.5 million people, but its per-capita purchasing power ranks among the highest in Asia, and its online spending continues to expand steadily. In particular, active travel between Hong Kong and mainland China means mainland visitors and cross-border shopping demand form a large share of revenue. Alipay (Zhifubao) is one of the world's largest mobile wallets, operated by Ant Group, and its cross-border payment program lets mainland users pay at Hong Kong and other overseas merchants using the same app they already know. It is important to first distinguish it from AlipayHK, the Hong Kong-local wallet, which has a separate app and balance.
Mainland Alipay is therefore especially valuable for businesses with a high share of mainland Chinese customers. Beauty and health-supplement commerce catering to mainland tourist demand, cross-border stores that also run a Simplified Chinese page, and sellers of K-content and merchandise targeting mainland fandoms can capture demand that would otherwise be missed with local card payments alone.
The consumer either scans a QR code shown on the checkout screen using the Alipay app, or invokes the Alipay app from a mobile website or app, then pays with their wallet balance or a linked bank card. Cross-border payments from mainland users are approved in an HKD-denominated amount, and Hecto Financial receives those proceeds in the local currency, HKD. After conversion, the Korean merchant is settled in one of the currencies chosen at contract signing — USD, KRW, or JPY. The detailed procedure for each checkout method (QR display, app redirect, in-app) should be confirmed against technical documentation before integration.
With a single contract with Hecto Financial, a Korea-based corporation can explore accepting mainland Alipay cross-border, without needing to sign a direct merchant agreement with Ant or a separate local payment contract in Hong Kong. That said, the cross-border program may apply industry restrictions and transaction limits, so it is advisable to confirm coverage terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) with Hecto Financial's sales team before signing a contract, based on your product categories and expected average order value.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that a specific merchant can actually integrate. Please confirm exact coverage and fees through a consultation.
Confirm contract eligibility as a Korea-based business
The integration method differs depending on whether you are online-only or also include physical stores in Hong Kong
Confirm in advance whether your products fall under Alipay's restricted merchant categories
Confirm compliance with Hong Kong's payment and foreign exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Alipay payment proceeds generated in Hong Kong are received by Hecto Financial in Hong Kong dollars (HKD). Rather than HKD landing directly in the Korean merchant's account, it goes through a conversion process and is settled in the currency designated at contract signing from among USD, KRW, and JPY. The settlement cycle and fee rate are set in the contract terms. Refunds are governed by both the Alipay cross-border program's refund rules and Hecto Financial's operating policy, so it is safest to confirm the refund window and the exchange rate basis during the contracting stage.
Hecto Financial's team will help you review a payment method mix suited to the Hong Kong market.
