A guide for Korean merchants looking to add Google Pay to their checkout flow for the Android-heavy environment used by most online consumers in Panama. It also covers the characteristics of this dollarized market and local payment habits such as Yappy.
Online payments in Panama are card-centered, and mobile financial adoption is high enough that the bank-app-based P2P service Yappy has become the go-to way to send money. Smartphones lean heavily toward Android, so for card-holding consumers checking out on the web or in an app, Google Pay naturally fits as a fast way to pay with a stored card. Because the currency is USD, overseas merchants' prices read exactly as listed, which also helps cross-border purchase conversion.
For businesses with a large share of Android app or mobile web traffic — mobile games and subscription services, or lower- to mid-priced cross-border physical goods — a Google Pay button in place of a card-entry form is a lever that raises payment completion rates. To reduce friction for customers accustomed to bank-app transfers (such as Yappy) when they move to paying an overseas merchant, it is recommended to feature Google Pay as the default among card-based methods.
When a consumer selects the Google Pay button at checkout, the card stored on their Google account is passed through in tokenized form, and approval is confirmed via device authentication (unlock, fingerprint, etc.). This is an online authentication structure where the card number itself is never entered. Panama transaction amounts are received by Hecto Financial in USD, and the merchant either receives that USD as-is or has it converted to KRW/JPY for settlement, as set in the contract.
A Korean company can consider accepting Google Pay through Hecto Financial's integration without a local contract in Panama. Availability and detailed terms (settlement cycle, fees, settlement currency) vary by industry and transaction volume, so a consultation before signing a contract is needed.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration is possible for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible on the basis of a Korea-registered business
The integration approach and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed as to whether your products fall under restricted categories in the Google Pay operator's merchant policy
Confirmation is needed as to whether Panama's payment and foreign exchange regulations are being followed (see official sources below)
Settlement follows a "receive, then pay out in the chosen currency" structure. Panamanian consumer payments are received in USD, and the merchant's settlement currency is set at contract time from among USD, KRW, and JPY. Merchants with a large share of dollar-denominated revenue minimize currency conversion by choosing USD settlement, while those whose accounting is centered on Korean won may find KRW settlement easier to manage. Refunds are processed back to the original payment card, with the deadline and exchange-rate basis following the contract terms.
The Hecto Financial team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Panamanian market.
