Jamaica is a relatively populous English-speaking country in the Caribbean, but everyday payments still lean heavily on cash, and mobile money is at an early stage of growth. The Jamaican dollar (JMD) is also a floating-rate currency, which should be factored in as well. This guide is for merchants in Korea considering PayPal adoption under these market conditions.
The population able to pay online in Jamaica is still limited to those who hold an international card or a PayPal account, making it a cash-centered market where bank account and card penetration is still expanding. Accordingly, it is more accurate to view PayPal not as a mass-market payment method but as a channel that absorbs demand from urban consumers with prior overseas purchase experience and from diaspora ties with family living in the United States or United Kingdom. Given the possibility of restrictions on receiving funds into local accounts, expected transaction volume should be set conservatively.
It is therefore more efficient not to target Jamaica alone, but to add PayPal as a payment option on a storefront that sells across the English-speaking Caribbean and Latin America, or in categories with clear appeal to Jamaican consumers, such as music and cultural content or street fashion.
At checkout, the consumer is taken to the PayPal login screen and authorizes payment using their balance or a linked card, and the merchant receives the authorization result in real time. Because JMD is not a transaction currency supported by PayPal, orders are typically authorized on a USD basis, and the consumer's card conversion to JMD follows the issuing bank's exchange rate. The funds then flow into Hecto Financial's collection account and go through the settlement process.
Hecto Financial guides merchants in Korea through whether they can accept PayPal payments from consumers in Jamaica, following a review of the merchant's industry and transaction structure. Because Jamaica's payment infrastructure is a market in transition, it is especially important to confirm coverage terms, fees, and risk items in detail before contracting.
※ This section describes a general integration procedure and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm exact coverage and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility as a merchant registered in Korea
The integration approach and priority differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, marketplaces, or mobile apps
Confirm in advance whether your products fall under categories restricted by the PayPal operator's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with Jamaica's payment and foreign-exchange regulations (see official sources below)
Merchant settlement is designed independently of JMD. Once Hecto Financial collects the consumer's payment funds, they are converted and paid out in the currency set under the contract (USD, KRW, or JPY), so the merchant does not bear the exchange risk from JMD's floating rate directly. Refunds are returned through the original channel to the consumer's PayPal account, and the specific deadline follows both the contract and PayPal's policy.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to find the right combination of payment methods for the Jamaican market.
