Google Pay is a tokenized wallet that lets Android smartphone and Chrome browser users in Switzerland pay without re-entering their card details. Here is a summary of the role Google Pay plays alongside TWINT and Apple Pay when building out a Swiss online checkout, along with its adoption requirements.
In Switzerland, with its high income levels and smartphone penetration, online card and wallet payments are part of everyday life. Although the market skews heavily toward Apple devices, the Android user base is still substantial, and for these users Google Pay is the default way to complete a one-click payment with a saved card. Where the nationally popular app TWINT is account- and app-based, Google Pay complements it as a card-based wallet serving a different customer segment.
This is especially useful for businesses selling primarily through the web. Because payment is completed with a saved card in the Chrome and Android web environment, digital content, subscription, and travel booking businesses concerned about mobile web conversion rates can expect reduced drop-off compared to manual card entry.
When a customer taps the Google Pay button at checkout, the card saved to their Google account is transmitted as a token, and the payment is confirmed with device unlock (biometric authentication, etc.). Switzerland is not directly subject to PSD2, but 3-D Secure 2, or strong customer authentication (SCA), is the standard at the card network level, and wallet authentication simplifies this process. The CHF payment amount is collected by Hecto Financial, converted, and settled in the chosen currency of USD, KRW, or JPY.
Google Pay acceptance can generally be considered through a single integration with Hecto Financial, and it is common for no separate local contract in Switzerland to be required. The specific scope of support and the fees and settlement terms vary depending on industry and transaction structure, so confirmation through consultation is required.
※ This section describes general support procedures and does not guarantee actual integration eligibility for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is possible on the basis of a domestic (Korean) business registration
The integration approach and priority vary depending on the composition of online sales channels, such as owned storefronts, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed as to whether the products fall under industries restricted by Google Pay's operator merchant policy
Switzerland's payments sector is overseen by FINMA rather than the EU, while its transfer infrastructure participates in the SEPA area. Card wallet payments follow the authentication requirements set by network rules (see official sources below)
The currency Swiss consumers pay in is CHF, and the currency the Korean merchant receives is whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was set under contract. Hecto Financial handles the collection and conversion in between. Refunds are returned to the original card used for payment, and the timing of the reflected refund may vary depending on the card issuer's policy.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Swiss market.
