Malta, both an English-language study destination and a Mediterranean tourist spot, sees steady demand from Chinese-speaking students and travelers. WeChat Pay is a cross-border payment method aimed at exactly this group, and here are the adoption conditions and settlement structure for Korean merchants.
Thanks to its English-speaking environment, Malta is one of Europe's leading destinations for English-language study, and combined with Mediterranean vacation demand, it is a market with a steady flow of Chinese-speaking students and travelers staying there. WeChat Pay is a payment service operated by Tencent within the WeChat app, and it serves as a cross-border method aimed not at local Maltese consumers but at exactly this group of Chinese-speaking visitors and residents.
For language-study or study-abroad related services, travel bookings, or online sales with a meaningful share of Chinese-speaking customers, it is common to adopt this alongside Alipay. The two wallets have overlapping but distinct user bases and payment habits, so we recommend adopting both together once Chinese customer sales are confirmed.
When a consumer approves payment via QR scan or in-app payment in the WeChat app, the amount is deducted from their yuan balance or linked account, and the merchant's transaction is recorded in euros (EUR). Hecto Financial receives this EUR amount, converts it, and settles the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected at contract time. Note also that under Chinese regulation, only real-name-verified accounts can make cross-border payments.
Cross-border WeChat Pay merchant enrollment can be reviewed on a Korea-registered business basis through Hecto Financial, without a direct contract with Tencent. Industry restrictions (under Chinese regulation) and settlement conditions require confirmation before signing a contract.

Confirm contract eligibility as a Korea-registered business
Integration method and priority vary depending on your online sales channel mix, such as owned storefronts, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Advance confirmation is needed to check whether your business falls under a category restricted by WeChat Pay's merchant policies
Confirmation is needed that you comply with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
WeChat Pay transactions are recorded on the merchant side in euros (EUR) (while the consumer pays in a yuan-converted amount), and Hecto Financial receives and converts the EUR before settling the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was selected at contract time. Refunds follow WeChat Pay's original-transaction refund method, and if the customer is a consumer within the EU, a 14-day withdrawal request may come in, so it is advisable to set a policy in advance for handling exchange rate fluctuations.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Maltese market.
