Most of Hungary's online shoppers use Android devices. Google Pay tokenizes and stores the Hungarian bank cards these consumers already carry, letting them bring up a card with one click, so payment can be completed without typing in a card number — which helps lift mobile conversion.
Hungarian e-commerce is growing steadily, and the widely adopted bank-issued card sits at the center of its payment methods. Combined with Android's majority share of the smartphone market, this makes Google Pay the most natural wallet-type payment method for Hungarian mobile shoppers. Because major Hungarian banks support registering cards with Google Pay, merchants can approach it as a way to improve the completeness of existing card payments, without needing to build a separate payment network.
This has the biggest impact in industries where fast repeat payment drives revenue — digital services such as games, in-app purchases, and streaming, and household goods or fashion commerce with frequent low- to mid-value repeat purchases — because from the second purchase onward, the input step disappears entirely for a stored card. To cover iOS customers as well, pairing this with Apple Pay, discussed in the comparison below, is the standard configuration.
When the consumer selects Google Pay at checkout, the card stored in their account is passed through as a token, and the payment is approved via the device's unlock authentication (fingerprint, face, or PIN). PSD2's SCA requirement is satisfied by combining this device authentication with 3DS2 when needed. Hecto Financial receives the approved funds in Hungarian forint (HUF) and, after currency conversion, settles with the Korean merchant in whichever of USD, KRW, or JPY was chosen in the contract.
Integrating through Hecto Financial lets merchants consider adding Google Pay to web and app checkout without a separate contract with Google or a Hungarian local financial institution. Support availability and detailed terms (settlement cycle, fees, currency options) vary by the merchant's industry and transaction volume, so confirmation is required before signing a contract.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee that integration will be possible for any specific merchant. Please confirm the exact scope of support and fees through a consultation.
Confirm whether a contract is available under a Korean business registration
The integration method and priorities differ depending on your online sales channel mix, such as an owned storefront, open marketplaces, or a mobile app
Check in advance whether your products fall under a restricted category under Google Pay's merchant policies
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
Funds from a Hungarian customer's Google Pay payment are generated in HUF; Hecto Financial receives and converts this HUF amount, then pays it to the Korean merchant in the settlement currency agreed in the contract (one of USD, KRW, or JPY). The settlement cycle and fees follow the contract terms. Refunds are processed to the original card linked to the token, and under EU distance-selling rules, Hungarian consumers may be able to request withdrawal within 14 days of receipt, so your return policy design should account for which product categories this applies to.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the payment method mix best suited to the Hungarian market.
