A guide for Korean merchants who want to offer one-click wallet payments to Cyprus consumers, for whom buying from overseas online stores is routine. Covers suitable business types for Google Pay, SCA compliance, and the settlement structure.
With no domestic card scheme, international card networks are the default for online payments in Cyprus, and because domestic e-commerce is small, a large share of consumers are accustomed to buying directly from overseas sites. Google Pay is Google's wallet service, offering one-click payment through tokenized cards stored on Android devices and in Chrome, and it fits well with the purchase journey of Cyprus consumers who pay at overseas merchants without ever typing in a card number.
The reduction in checkout friction is particularly valuable for mobile bookings and ticket purchases that spike during the tourist high season, and for fashion, electronics, and digital service categories where Cyprus consumers repeatedly buy from overseas online stores. Because Android holds a high share in Europe, adopting Google Pay alongside Apple Pay broadens your wallet coverage.
When a customer taps the Google Pay button and approves with a tokenized card stored on their device, the transaction completes without entering a card number. Device lock and biometric authentication are used to satisfy PSD2's SCA (strong customer authentication) requirement, reducing drop-off from additional authentication steps. The authorized euro (EUR) funds are collected and converted by Hecto Financial and paid out to the merchant in Korea in the contracted currency of USD, KRW, or JPY.
Google Pay is a method that can be reviewed for adoption on the basis of a contract with a Korean business, through Hecto Financial integration, without a separate local contract in Cyprus. However, actual support availability and settlement cycle, fees, and currency options vary by merchant conditions, so confirmation with the sales team should come first.
※ This section describes the general support process and does not guarantee actual integration availability for any specific merchant. Please consult with us to confirm the exact coverage and fees.
Confirm contract eligibility for businesses registered in Korea
The integration approach and priorities vary depending on your mix of online sales channels, such as your own site, open marketplaces, and mobile apps
Check in advance whether your products fall under restricted categories per the Google Pay operator's merchant policy
Confirm compliance with EU payment regulations such as PSD2 and SEPA (see official sources below)
The settlement flow for Google Pay transactions is "collect in euros, convert, then pay out in the chosen currency." Hecto Financial collects the EUR funds, converts them, and settles domestically in one of USD, KRW, or JPY as set at contract, while refunds are returned to the original card linked to the token. Given the EU's 14-day right of withdrawal that applies to Cyprus consumers, noting the expected refund turnaround on the checkout page can reduce inquiries.
Hecto Financial's team will work with you to review the right combination of payment methods for the Cyprus market.
